    Workshop Description:
    This woodfire workshop at Pottery West will address all aspects of the wood firing process.  Discussions of clay bodies, slips, glazes, wood types, and firing techniques will be heavily emphasized.
    This workshop will include presentations, lectures, and movies. We will fire the train kiln and wood-soda kiln.
    This workshop is designed for the serious, dedicated, and advanced ceramic student.

    Heidi Kreitchet received her Bachelors of Fine Art in ceramics from Northern Arizona University in 2004. There she studied under Don Bendel, Jason Hess, Paula Rice, and Ted Adler. After graduation she had a position assisting renowned ceramic artist Don Reitz in the next two years.
    In 2006, Kreitchet attended Utah State University where she earned her Masters in Fine Art in ceramics (2009). Kreitchet has been woodfiring for over ten years in the Southwest and continues while working for Amy Kline at Pottery West.

    Start Pottery Classes Anytime!

    Mondays 6-9pm: Beginners and Intermediates. There are 2 – 3 instructors assigned to this class.

    Tuesdays 10-1 pm: Beginners with Brian Ayriss. (Intermediates are welcome)

    Thursdays 10 – 1pm: Beginners and Intermediates with Amy Kline, and Thom Bee.

    Saturday 11-2pm: Beginners and Intermediates with Adam Steinman and Thom Bee. This class section starts January 23rd.

    Sundays 9 – 12 pm: Instructors are here to answer questions during this open studio time.

    Classes: A first time purchase of 7 weeks for $75 includes a 25 lb. bag of clay. Your 7 weeks registration always includes unlimited access to the pottery studio to fit into your schedule. The pottery studio is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

    Pottery Tool Kit: You can purchase a Pottery Tool Kit from Pottery West for $18.33 This includes sales tax. You can also purchase tool kits from other places as long as it’s a kit made by Kemper. They have the best quality tool kits. The tools in the other kits are not sharp enough to work with.

    6 Month Membership:$275 and includes 75 lbs. of stoneware or porcelain.

    12 Month Membership: $525 and includes 150 lbs. of stoneware or porcelain.

    Your 6 month and 12 month memberships include unlimited access to the pottery studio to continue working on your clay work. And, attend an unlimited amount of classes.  The pottery studio is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

    purchasing clay: Other clay can be purchased for $25 for 25 lbs. The cost of this clay includes the cost of firing, glazing and helps us cover the cost of utilities and other consumables.

    Please note: new students can come in to any of the beginning pottery classes listed below to register and get started on the potters’ wheel. We’ll assign you a shelf and give you your first bag of clay to get started. Wear comfortable clothes and be ready to get dirty!

    Pottery West Instructors: Each of our instructors differ in how we teach and what type of work we create. This is what makes our teaching technique in pottery so effective. It’s important to learn from different instructors to find the way that works best for you at the level of learning you are currently at. Sometimes this is confusing – let us know if we need to help you understand something better.

    Pottery West 7 week Syllabus is available on this site under pages to the right hand side of the site. This is handed out to you when you start classes with us. This week-to-week guide will help you as you attend different classes with different instructors. Hand this to your current instructor for that class section and they will know what you need to be learning during that week.You will want to keep this on your assigned shelf with your clay, tools, and your clay work.

    GLAZES: WE CURRENTLY HAVE CLOSE TO 30 (cone 10) GLAZES TO CHOOSE FROM!!

    CLAY: We carry Studio B-MIX and Porcelain. The cost of our clay to $25 for 25 lbs. of B-Mix or Porcelain. This cost for clay includes a lab fee for all those wonderful glazes, your bisque firing, and glaze firing for cone 10 gas-reduction. The cost also includes the cost of utilities. Yes, we have central AC and Heat here at Pottery West!

    FACILITY: 3000 sq. ft. of Air-conditioned studio space with 20 wheels, slab roller and 3 spray booths and a grinder.

    KILNS:

    1.A 27 Cu. Ft. Geil Gas Kiln we fire to cone 10-reduction.

    2.Wood Train Kiln will be fired again in November 2009. As a Pottery West Member you fire in the wood kilns for FREE!! (this offer is valid for those people signed up for the 6 month Membership with Pottery West)

    3.Wood/Soda Arch Kiln. Next firing is September 30, 2009

    4.Raku Firings. We just had a great firing on September 12th with pottery demonstrations by Floyd Young. Contact us to find out when our next Raku Event will be scheduled.

    5.Down-draft Pit-Fire kiln. We’ll be firing it for the first time this fall and we’ll post pits when we get the first load of pots out.

    6. 16 cu. ft. electric kiln we use for bisque-firing.

    Special notes about the 2010 workshop:

    1)Tom starts early and throws with us all morning and all through the day.

    2)The pottery is open 24/7 and most people attending this workshop continue throwing into the night after dinner.

    3)There’s a lot of great energy in this workshop thanks to Tom and the people who attend.

    A 50% deposit holds your place in this workshop. This is the only week long, hands-on workshop in 2010 where on-site housing is available. Other lodging is available less then 1 mile away at The Santa Fe Hotel and Casino. If you’re flying into McCarren International Airport you will need to provide your own transportation to and from the airport. Transportation to and from the Santa Fe Hotel and Casino and Pottery West is provided by Pottery West.

    We are accepting 20 people for this workshop.  Workshop includes breakfast items and catered lunches.
