Amy Kline teaches you what temperature to bisque fire your work so the bisque is soft to carve into. This process does not require power tools. Most importantly, it doesn’t hurt your hands.
Carving and incising on bisque fired clay allows you to handle the piece and work deeper into the surface. This process is especially helpful if you have a busy schedule and you only have small segments of time you can work on clay.
Amy Kline has been learning how to throw and alter porcelain from Tom Coleman. Tom and Elaine Coleman suggested she carve on bisqueware.
After throwing and altering porcelain Amy bisque fires her forms. She then carves, sands and incises her forms after they have been bisque fired.
Day 1:
Breakfast items and coffee are available in the kitchen of the main house at Pottery West for all workshop participants from 7:00 – 9:00 am.
Workshop begins at 9:00 am: Throwing and Altering Forms to be Bisque Carved
Amy will start the morning at 9:00 am with a demonstration of throwing and altering forms thrown off the hump. Participants will throw and alter forms before and after lunch.
Lunch is bag-lunch (everyone brings their own.)
By late afternoon Amy will hand-out bisque fired cups to all of the participants along with tools and a dust mask to carve bisqueware. We will load and candle a bisque fire by the end of the day (work dries quickly in our desert climate.)
Dinners: Pottery West has an on-site kitchen and all workshop participants are welcome to use the kitchen to prepare meals with each other. Amy Kline is a vegan with some food allergies and she prefers to leave the meal planning up to the participants.
Day 2:
Carving, Incising and Sanding Bisqueware
Amy will start the day at 9-10:30 am with a demonstration of carving, sanding and incising on bisqueware. She will be demonstrating on a larger, sculptural form that will be video-projected onto a screen for the best viewing. This way you will be able to see close-ups of the tools and how they are used along with details of light and shadow.
After the demonstration participants will be working on bisque fired cups Amy is providing for the workshop. We will have a bisque kiln firing and cooling with our work in it from the first day.
Day 3:
Carving, Incising and Sanding on Bisqueware
We will unload our bisque fired work from the first day. Amy will spend a little time in the morning with critique of the cups we carved on Day 2. She will show how to use light and shadow to create line and form. (The form you are working on becomes a 3 dimensional canvas.) The rest of this day will be spent carving, incising and sanding our work.
For this workshop Amy will provide 25 lbs. of clay (B-Mix or Coleman Porcelain) 1 medium-sized bisque fired cup, carving, incising and sanding tools, and a dust mask. You will want to bring your throwing and trimming tools.
“The most intricate details can make the largest impact on an overall form.”
